My Big Fat Race For Life.

“Make Me Lovely” is the name of this blog, and it is exactly what my most recent challenge aims to do. Cryptic? A little. So I shall explain…

I am running The 10K Race For Life to help beat breast Cancer. I keep trying to write what The Race For Life is and why I want to run in it and take part in an amazing event, but my words don’t do it as much justice as the video on the Race For Life homepage here.

Doesn’t it look amazing? I’ve set myself this challenge for 3 reasons:

1) My mum was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer and whilst she is ABSOLUTELY FINE now, it really hit home and made me want to raise money for a chairty which  helps so many women and families in the same position.

2) Did you know that regular exercise can help reduce the risk of breast cancer? Well apparently so! And with my own rather large pair of boobs, I want to make that risk as reduced as possible. Training 4 times a week will be fun…….eek.

3) I desperately need to lose some weight. I have let it creep on and on in the past 4 years and I’m now classified as “Overweight”. I hate it. The Race For Life gives me something to focus on and inspire me to train and eat healthily. I now have willpower…how amazing is that!

So, from now on expect to see some blog posts about my training, my diet, my progress and (hopefully) my successes. It’s just another great thing for me to talk about.

Hope you enjoy my new little challenge. Are you up for your own challenge? Tell me about it in the comments! And if you want to get behind this amazing cause you can donate to Cancer Research UK online or you can Sponsor me – it all goes to the same place ūüôā

Love Helen

TAG: 40 Beauty Questions

-How many times do you wash your face daily?
Twicea day, I try not to do it anymore than that as I have VERY dry skin and all the washing just dries it out. If I need to re apply my makeup during the day though, I’ll whap out a makeup wipe rather and then tone and moisturise.

-What skin type do you have? (dry, oily, combo)
Dry/Sensitive skin

-What is your current facial wash?
Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Shea Butter. I have used this for years now and I love it! However, I kind of want to try something different – I’m thinking Laura Mercier (after Elle Fowlers (allthatglitters21) declaration of love for it) OR perhaps I’ll revert back to the Clinique 3 step routine. When I used to use it they didn’t have the range for very dry skin and I found it a bit harsh, but maybe now it will work…

-Do you exfoliate?
I certainly do. Clarins (again!) One-Steo Gente Exfoliating Cleanser with Orange Extract. The exfoliating “grain” is gentle enough for my sensitive skin but rough enough to wake up my face! I use it every other day before my normal cleanser.

-What brand do you use?
Woops, I am ahead of the game. Like I have just said, Clarins.

-What moisturizer do you use?
Clinique Dramatically Different Mosturizing Lotion. My favourite product ever!

-Do you have freckles?
I do, and lots of them! Summer time is coming and I am dreading getting even frecklier on my face. I look like my mouth is dirty/I have a moustache – though it is quite amusing!

-Do you use eye cream?
At the moment no, but I am looking for a good one for dark undereye circles (not eyebags!). Any suggestions?

-Do you or did you have acne prone skin?
Not at all. My skin is so dry that I have never really suffered from acne or even spots. I’m very luvky in that sense but it means I have to take extra care that my skin is hydrated so I don’t get premature wrinkles!

-Did you ever have to use Pro-activ?
I haven’t.

-What foundation do you use?
MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC20 (winter) ot NC25 (summer). I like a full coverage to cover my freckles (sorry if you love your freckles, I just like to control mine!) Again I am on the lookout for a good tinted moisturiser that isn’t orange! Suggestions?

-How about concealer?
I use Rimmel Hide The Blemish Concealer in Soft Honey and MAC select moisture cover in NC20.

-Do you know your undertone color?
No. I can’t work it out!! Though I use MAC NC rather than NW… maybe I should upload a picture of myself and people can tell me my undertone, and also the shape of my face…I am bad at assessing myself haha.

-What do you think of fake eyelashes?
I adore them. I use Eyelure strip eyelashes in “glamour” when I go out but a friend of mine recently got eyelash extensions and they look fabulous! An investment I may have to make.

-Did you know that you are supposed to change your mascara every 3 months?
I certainly did. I try to keep my make up collection small(ish) so I can use products up by the time they “expire”. As Lolipop26 observed in her Tag YSL Faux Cils mascara dries up much before 3 months anyway!

-What brand of mascara do you use?
My favourite everyday mascara is Rimmel Extrame Black Volume Flash Mascara. It makes my lashes thicker and glossier but not clumpy. For a bit of luxury though I do ADORE the YSL Faux Cils mascara, it make me look like I have false eyelashes on. Perfect.

-Sephora or MAC?
MAC!! I live in Spain at the moment and can’t find MAC anywhere, yet Sephora is everywhere! I feel the quality of Sephora doesn’t match the price (Spanish prices!) where as MAC is worth every penny!

-Do you have a MAC Pro-card?
No. I’m nothing like professional, and as a student have limited expenditure so the normal MAC range is enough for me now…

-What makeup tools do you use in make up application?
For foundation and concelaer I use my fingers! I then have a bunch of Body Shop, MAC and Ruby and Millie brushes for powders etc. and I buff my face with a lovely Kabuki brush. I use eyelash curlers too…but is that application?

-Do you use make-up base/primer for the eyes?
No. I prep my eyes with concealer and foundation and powder and my eyeshadow seems to stay. Although I do fancy trying out the Urban Decay primer potion I have heard so much about.

-For the face?
I really don’t believe “primers” work…I think its another step invented to sell another product. However, that being said, I use Clarins Beauty Flash Balm as my own version of primer. It “tightens” (in the good way!) and smoothes my skin, makes me have a more evn complexion and makes my skin look amazingly bright and fresh. PLUS it seems to me that it helps my makeup last extra long too.

-What is your favorite eyeshadow (color or shade)?
For an everyday quad I love The Body Shops Shimmer Cube Palette 06. I use a mixture of Marshmallow, Dark Chocolate and Choc Chip to create a smokey eye.

-Do you use pencil or liquid eyeliner?
Both. I like pencils to create a less harsh line and be a bit “smudgier” with and liquid liners to create a perfect precise line that look really clean.

-How often do you poke your eyes with an eyeliner pencil?
Often, haha, I am the clumsiest person EVER!

-What do you think of pigment eyeshadows?
I think they are great for people with more time/professional skill than me, but I like the simlicity of a nice easy eyeshadow.

-Do you use mineral makeup?
No, I have never tried it as I feel that Bare Minerals (for example) would just dry out my already dry skin. I like a nice liquid foundation for moisturisation.

-What is your favorite lipstick?
I am not a massive lipstick wearer but when I do wear it (to go out, rather than day time) I tend to mix it up all the time. At the moment I am loving Rimmel Soft Coral (600) which gives a soft coral look….duh! Haha.

-How about lipgloss?
I really like Philosophy lipgloss in gratitude. It is a really soft pink which is super shiny but not sticky! Thanks to my boyfriend for buying me it!!

-What is your favorite blush to use?
The first benefit product in the entire questionnaire…CORALista. It is a gorgeous pinky/corally colour with a hint of shimmer that is not at all glittery but kind of works as a highlighter within the blush. I love it.

-Do you buy your makeup on ebay?
Never, I don’t trust it for some reason…

-Do you like drugstore makeup?
Haha, as you can see by many of my favourite products I love it! For my foundation and skincare I tend to use more high end brands as I don’t mind investing in my skin to make it stay lovely. But, for lipsticks, eyeshadows and other things that you alternate all the time I head to the nearest Boots or Superdrug (UK!) On a student budget I just can’t justify spending so much money on “trend” products. And often, they can be just as good, even copies of, their expensive rivals.

-Do you go to CCO’s? (cosmetic company outlets)
I don’t, in truth I don’t even know where one is in England…

-Did you ever consider taking make-up classes?
I would LOVE to. I had some “training” classes to become a Body Shop at Home consultant but I am really considering perhaps taking some night classes or a MAC course in makeup. I want to do marketing as my career – hopefully marketing cosmetics – and I think a knowledge in the cosmetics you are marketing will make everything easier and better!

-Are you clumsy in putting on makeup?
I’m clumsy at putting on makeup, taking of makeup, walking, eating….EVERYTHING!

-Name a makeup crime that you hate?
Orange Faces. They have a lot of them in the UK. There are so many shades to choose from yet half the population seem to chose “tangerine” and put the makeup on 2 inches thick. It looks so fake and unhealthy.

-Do you like colorful shades of makeup (lipstick, eyeshadow) or neutral ones?
Iam quite a neutral person. I don’t like to be too bright or bold. However, when I am going on a night out my playful side comes out and I get experimenting. I’d say neutrals are my “go-to”, everyday products but brights are there for when I am feeling a bit experimental.

-Which celebrity always has great make up?
I think Lauren Conrad always has great makeup, as has Fearne Cotton. Quite natural, sunkissed and glowing. That is what I like/

-If you could leave the house using just ONE make up item, what would you use?
Mascara!! My friends laugh at me because without mascara I feel like I have zero eyes, like a baby mole! I have quite good skin too so the defintion of my eyes would change my face the most.
-Could you ever leave the house without any makeup on?
Definitely, and I often do! I like to give my skin a rest and head to the shops or wherever without makeup. Also, on the beach I think any makeup is just wrong!

-Do you think you look good even without any makeup on?
I think I look alright but my face definitely looks better with makeup on. Makeup is there to accentuate and highlight and make all your good features look even better, and that is what I do! Even my boyfriend admits that whilst he thinks I am beautiful without makeup, I looke better with it haha. He is very honest!

-In your opinion, what is the BEST makeup line?
MAC. They are high end, with low(ish) prices and amazing variety of products. Everyone loves them so they must be doing something right!

-What do you think of Makeup?
I love it! I see makeup like another art form that can just be seen every single day! You walk around with your “creation” on your face. Even if it is a simple make up look, you have still created something and made yourself look amazing. Plus, I am terrible at art but GOOD at makeup so it makes me feel very creative haha!

And with that I am done. Why don’t you answer the 40 questions!

Anybody out there?

So I started this blog a while back and put up a few “introductory” posts for people to read, hoping that I may get some feedback on what to write in my future blogs… how silly I was!

Of COURSE there will be no feedback, I have no readers – 10 hits in a month is a pretty small audience! – so what do I do to get people to stop on my blog, and not skip over it amongst the millions of other blogs on the internet?

Answer: I really don’t know….hmmm.

I really want people to read, contribute to, and enjoy what I write but are you meant to publicise a blog? So many questions I don’t have the answers to. My solution is that I’m going to try and link this blog on comments I make on other beauty blogs/youtube channels etc. and hope that maybe a few people (anything more than 10!) will head over and take a look.

Fingers crossed that maybe I will get one comment!! Haha

Little voice, amazing makeup.

So, this is my last post of the night, just to get you started and see the kind of things I like.

Diana Vickers was in X Factor in the UK in 2008. She may not quite be Leona Lewis, but I love her voice and also her look. If I love her voice then why is this post titled “Little voice, amazing makeup”? Well, she became the youngest person to star as the leading role in Jim Cartwright’s “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” on the West End.

Her single is due for release and I think it sounds fab. Take a look at her website and watch the vlogs to hear her single and a taster of her West End production:

BUT the reason this is on my blog is because I LOVE the hair and makeup that featured in the artwork for her new album is incredible. She has a great, unique sense of style anyway but I think the make up team did an amazing look. What do you think?

How about I recreate the look where Diana has pink eyeshadow and some gorgeous brown eyeliner? I think it is one of the first looks and it is my fave!

Let me know if you love it or hate it!

A little quote.

This is one of the best quotes ever. I’m quite an upbeat person and this kind of just sums everything up. Thanks for being so¬†eloquent¬†Audrey Hepburn:

“I believe in pink.

I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner.

I believe in kissing, kissing a lot.

I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong.

I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.

I believe that tomorrow is another day

and I believe in miracles.”

You’re my inspiration.

When I was little I was the biggest tomboy. I played with my brother and his friends, roaming through the woods and playing football. My hair would be a little birds nest of white blonde hair and my freckly face, covered in additional specks of dirt.

Never did I ever (nor did my parents I don’t think) imagine that makeup would become my biggest love…but it sure did!

So who inspired me?  Who got me hooked on the shadows and shimmers, the fluids and fixes, mascaras and MAC? Let me tell you.

  1. Firstly, my friends. They loved make up before me and FORCED me to wear some. Thanks guys! Some Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse, Rimmel Bronzer and Body Shop Mascara and I was set.
  2. Myself. Is that too self loving? I just loved playing with it, messing around and experimenting with colours and products and making some HUGE messes but also some wonderful successes. As my products grew, so did my skill and my passion for make up.
  3. Youtube! How amazing are the makeup gurus?! It’s like an online forum of beauty tips and reviews from around their world, without them we would have to research forever to find all the exciting and¬†innovative¬†international brands. The looks they create are amazing, and there is so much to see! You guys are amazing, and hopefully you are here reading my blog now – hence the title of this blog post.

So read away. The blog will be full of all the kind of stuff you see on Youtube. What’s in my bag? Make-up routines, makeup looks, reviews, hair ideas, skincare routines, exercise ideas. favourite products etc. etc. And I hope to blog 2 or 3 times per week because I can never wait long enough to get the new tips and tricks from the Youtube Gurus, so hopefully if you like this, you won’t have to wait!

Also, I have said how there are LOADS of make-up gurus on Youtube right? Well, I have found the majority are American. I am English, and I’m currently living in Spain so I shall try and review some interesting products which may not reach the other side of the pond!

I hope you keep reading and enjoy the blog.

p.s. Give me your ideas for my first blog post, I want to blog something which YOU want, so give me your ideas and I’ll do the most requested! (…hopefully I will get some requests!!)
